There’s definitely an increase in the number of people who are opting to volunteer during their vacations since my first volunteers experience back in 2013. People are becoming more selfless with their abroad vacations opting to volunteer at the same time as holiday. And why not? Volunteering abroad gives you more of an opportunity to experience all that country has to offer. From working with the locals to eating home made food, choosing a volunteer vacation really does give you the best of both worlds.
Choose Your Volunteer Vacations Experience
We have many volunteer vacations placements to choose from but if your stuck with which one to pick, ask yourself what your most passionate about and what you’d enjoy doing the most. When I first volunteered I volunteered to teach in a primary school but after a few days changed my placement to orphanage work as I found this to be much more rewarding. Its important that you decide which placement you’d like to do the most as it can be difficult logistically to change when you are in the country. If you have certain skill sets these will come in handy to certain placements and you’ll find the more of a benefit you are to your placement the more rewarding an experience you’ll have.
Look for Opportunities that Fit with Your Expenses
You are travelling abroad, you will be away for some time and you need to make sure your expenses are sufficient for your stay. We recommend about $50 USD is a sufficient amount for your weekly expenses. You may want to increase this if your planning on eating out or buying gifts. Our prices are kept as low as possible as we are a registered charity and do not run African Volunteer Vacations to make a profit but rather to bring in donations. Which is why a portion of your program fee is sent as a donation to your chosen placement.
Know You’re Doing Good
Volunteers help in so many ways in the communities they work in but the biggest thing they leave the communities with is hope. Hope that tomorrow will bring a better future because just one volunteer cares enough to come and visit them and assist in whatever way they can. You’ll so often find the locals praising your efforts and thanking you. Remember you may not change the world on you volunteer experience but you will create a positive impact to someone if you work hard in your placement which is always so appreciated. Also, with all of our placements we donate part of your program fee to the placement your volunteering at so it’s not just your time your donating but but rest assured your money is getting put to great use and being used wisely.
